Macadamian Stories: Lorraine Chapman

I’ve been at Macadamian for over 10 years and still consider myself lucky to be working here. When I started with Macadamian, I was part of the User Experience team working as a researcher on a wide variety of projects across many different verticals. My time at Macadamian has meant that I’ve been onsite doing research on primary inspection lines at the border, observing nurses and other allied health professionals as they go about their day helping patients, and in Network Operation centers learning how support kicks in when things go wrong — just to name a few. This is what attracted me to Macadamian in the first place — with over a 140 projects a year, you get exposed to many different domains on which you can exercise your expertise as well as learn and grow new skills. Over the years I went from practicing research to product manager to Director of Research.

Today, I am privileged to be leading the Healthcare Practice at Macadamian. Our philosophy is that we create “software solutions that unleash the power of ideas and are a joy to use”, and I would add “are meaningful to the intended users”. Over the years, my team and I have had the opportunity to work on applications in the following areas:

· Electronic medical records

· Remote care monitoring

· Patient engagement platforms

· Secure communication between clinicians and patients

· Ultrasound systems

· Population health and care coordination

· Digital health and IoT

· And many, many more…

As a result of my healthcare experience, I had the privilege of chairing the HIMSS (Health Information Management System Society) Health IT UX committee. My two year term just finished but the experience of working with so many different people in the industry with a common goal of improving the UX of Health systems is something that will stay with me for years to come.

Healthcare IS meaningful and knowing that I’m working on projects that can improve people’s lives is what gets me out of bed in the morning. But I have to say, it’s the really, really smart people I get to work with on a daily basis — UXers, developers, Account Managers, Project Managers — who keep me here.
